Fisker Karma - the hybrid unlike any other!

With a strong focus on luxurious materials with sustainability in mind, it is both in its design and basic idea unique in the hybrid market. With approx. 2,500 cars manufactured in one year, it is an unusual sight both in Sweden and Europe. At the time of writing this article there are only 19 vehicles for sale in Europe! The price for a new Fisker Karma at launch, depending on the configuration, was between 100,000 and 120,000 dollars.

The founder of Fisker is the Danish car designer Henrik Fisker. He has previously worked designing cars for BMW, Ford, and Aston Martin. He designed BMW Z8 which today is a car with high collector status (read expensive to buy). Today, Henrik Fisker works with the car Fisker Ocean, which was recently launched by the company Fisker Inc. Just like Karma, Ocean is also intended to have a low environmental impact in focus when choosing materials and production methods. Fisker Karma was built by Valmet Automotive in Finland, which built cars for Porsche, SAAB and Mercedes-Benz, among others.

The technical solution for the car was outstanding at the launch in 2012. Karma is powered by two electric motors of 200 hp each, mounted on the rear wheels. These get their power via a 400 volt battery pack. To charge the battery, a generator is connected to a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine of approx. 260hp, manufactured by General Motors. If you wish to charge the battery on the driveway, this works fine via normal 240v. The range of the battery is stated to be approx. 80km, depending on driving style and temperature, among other things. Average consumption according to NEDC for the car is stated by the Swedish Transport Agency to be approx. 2.1L/100km. Since the average emission is 51g/km, the annual tax is only SEK 360.

In terms of design, the car stands out. With its shape that mimics a hammerhead shark, it is difficult to associate the car with non-generic vehicles that all look alike. The solar panels on the roof are used to power lighting and other less demanding applications. What looks like exhaust pipes on the end of the car are actually two speakers that play sound when the vehicle is driven. The man behind the sound that the car plays is said to be the sound creator for, among other things, the sci-fi series Star Trek. The actual exhaust pipe is mounted just behind the front wheel. 12 years after its release, the Fisker Karma still looks modern and turns heads.

The interior of the Fisker Karma is definitely something out of the ordinary and reminds you that you are not sitting in an "ordinary" car. The asymmetrical design of the seats and diamond-shaped gear selector stand out and look wonderfully inviting! The wooden details in the car come from collected driftwood and, with their untreated surface, are a feast for the eyes. The leather on the seats comes from cow and Fisker uses 85% of the leather, compared to other luxury cars where an extremely small percentage is sufficient as material.

The quality still feels extremely good and from an environmental point of view you can perhaps sleep a little better at night. Doug DeMuro who has become famous for his car reviews compares a 10-year-old Fisker Karma to an early 2010's S class in terms of comfort, which is far from bad!
