A Two-Wheeled Honda with Cult Status and Six Cylinders
Featured cars
It's no wonder this motorcycle is held so dear by so many motorcycle enthusiasts. The Honda CBX 1000 is one of the few six-cylinder motorcycles and was early on dubbed a "hyperbike" thanks to its performance, which impressed alongside what was already on the market.Bidders HighwayAugust 16, 2023 12:00
The name refers to the size of the engine – 1,047 cc – a straight six with four valves per cylinder and two overhead camshafts. And not only that: it was also installed transversely. This particular object has a very interesting history and was bought new by the designer Pelle Petterson. He has designed everything from watches to mopeds, to cars and boats. He has also designed a particular Volvo – the Saint's P1800 from the 1960s.
– Pelle Petterson bought this bike in 1980 in Newport, where he competed for Sweden in the America's Cup, says the seller of the object at Bidders Highway. It appears in the purchase contract that it was bought through the company The Swedish Challenge for the America's Cup Inc, with Pelle Petterson's signature. After the competition, the CBX 1000 and a few more motorcycles were loaded into a container to be shipped to Sweden.
Once back home in Sweden, the motorcycle remained with Pelle Petterson for 16 years. It was only upon a sale to Claes Ronge at Ahlqvist MC that it was registered for use in Sweden.
– At that point, the 16-year-old front tyre was also replaced with a new one, he continues. The front tyre was manufactured in 1995 and is still fitted today. Claes owned the CBX for about ten years.
A total of 38,079 units of the Honda CBX 1000 were built in Japan and 3,150 at Honda's factory in Ohio, USA. Production lasted four years – between 1978 and 1982. This particular example is exceptional, with an interesting connection to Swedish industrial design besides.
