A DTM racer for the street! BMW E30 M3.

Featured cars
When the BMW M3 entered the scene in the 1980s, it had one purpose – to meet the International Automobile Federation's requirements to compete in the German touring car championship, DTM. In other words, the original M3 is a race car, a car with motorsport in its DNA.

To be allowed to compete in what was then the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft, one of the regulatory requirements was that 5,000 road-legal cars of the corresponding type existed. BMW's engineers put their heads together, and development of the E30 M3 was set in motion. If only they knew they were writing history…

The story behind this particular object is just as unique as the car itself. The seller is, at his core, a BMW technician with 20 years of experience with the brand. That he would own a BMW was therefore a given. Nor can it be denied that the connection to DTM was a major factor behind the choice of car.

– The sound from the intake on a DTM E30 is among the coolest things you can hear, that's where I fell completely, the seller recounts. It's a bit special in Alpine White with a red leather interior. As a 1990 model year, it's the only one – I haven't heard of anyone with a similar one.

It was love at first sight at a BMW meet in Västerås in 2009. The seller spotted the Alpine White pearl and got in touch with the owner. Sure enough, it turned out the owner was prepared to part with it, but circumstances got in the way of a deal. At least for the time being.

– Then I got hold of a meticulously maintained '90, a red one, he continues. But that fell through too, since I didn't have time to go down and look at it during the week, and he absolutely didn't want to just do a bank transfer; he found that a bit uncomfortable.

Shame on those who give up. The seller reached out once again to the owner of the white M3 – the very object currently live at auction with us. Finally, they came to an agreement and were able to settle on a deal.
– I was on him and called him quite often, he says with enthusiasm in his voice. In the end he decided, and I got to buy it.

Shifting priorities and almost 15 years later mean that it's now time to let the car move on to a new and eager owner.

– If I could choose, I'd like to see someone who feels love for the car model, he concludes.

Someone who understands its value beyond the financial, and someone who keeps it in good condition but isn't afraid to use it for what it was built for. Many criteria, but you can always hope!
