Rover is one of the British marques you can buy and sell at auction through Bidders Highway. The company began in Coventry making bicycles before turning to cars, and built a reputation for understated comfort – timber veneers, leather and quiet engineering rather than overt flash.

Enthusiasts tend to look first at the P4 and P5 saloons of the 1950s and 60s, and at the P6, which as the Rover 2000 took the very first European Car of the Year title. The wedge-shaped SD1 has a growing following of its own, while the 800 series and the later 75 – frequently with the turbocharged 1.8-litre engine – offer a well-appointed saloon for sensible money. Car production under the Rover name ended in 2005, which gives the final cars a clear place in the story of the British motor industry.
