Basic Information and History

The 1970 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Convertible is a timeless classic from the peak years of the American muscle car era, where luxury and power were combined in a nearly uncompromising way for its time. With its distinctive design language, generous exterior dimensions, and an exceptional comfort package, this model stands today as one of the most sought-after American convertibles from the period.

The example now being auctioned at Bidders Highway was originally delivered in the USA and later imported to Sweden, where it has had only one user after import. Original manuals remain, along with some documented history and receipts.

About the Model

The Oldsmobile Ninety Eight was the top-of-the-line model in 1970, representing the best General Motors had to offer in terms of comfort, space, and technical solutions. The convertible version combined prestigious design with a driving experience well above the average in its segment.

The model is characterized by its generous length of over 5.7 meters, its luxurious interior with space for six adults, and a solid chassis with a focus on both strength and smooth ride quality. The Ninety Eight symbolized Oldsmobile’s ambition to compete directly with Cadillac and Buick on the luxury market, but with a clearer sporty undertone.

The Engine – Oldsmobile Rocket 455

Under the hood sits Oldsmobile’s famous Rocket 455 V8, a motor that has become legendary in American car history. With its 7.5 liters, it delivered up to 365 hp in standard configuration and massive torque at low revs, making it the perfect combination of power and drivability.

The Rocket 455 was known for its reliability and strong torque range, and in the Ninety Eight it provided both majestic cruising and more than enough power to move this large convertible effortlessly. For many enthusiasts, the Rocket 455 is the heart that makes the model so desirable today – embodying the “bigger is better” philosophy of American automotive history while delivering a classic V8 sound.
