Mercedes-Benz 230 Safari/Universal (1967)
Basic Information and History
This 1967 Mercedes-Benz 230 Safari/Universal is not just a rare car – it’s a unique piece of Swedish automotive history. It was sold new in Sweden and has had two previous users (three owners in total). Its history is well documented.
The model was popularly referred to as the “Safari” and originated from a collaboration between the Swedish company Philipsons and Mercedes-Benz. Philipsons arranged for regular Mercedes W110 sedans to be converted into practical estate versions at a factory in Belgium. These cars were then officially named “Universal.”
Of the remaining Safari/Universal cars today, this is one of only six known examples in Sweden – and one of just two delivered with a manual gearbox and a 6-cylinder petrol engine. Most others were built with small diesel engines. A true rarity.

Condition
Body & Paint:
Usable condition with patina. According to the previous owner, it was restored and repainted in the 1980s. Minor rust is present, particularly in exposed areas – but the overall impression is solid. Front fenders have touch-ups. The chrome on the rear bumper shows some age-related wear.
Interior:
Original interior in good condition. Some age-related wear but no damage. The headliner is intact and would benefit from a detailing. All controls are functional – except for the speedometer, which under-reads.
Drivetrain & Engine:
The engine starts easily and maintains proper oil pressure. Gearbox and clutch are functional, though the shift from 2nd to 3rd gear feels a bit vague. No unusual noises from the drivetrain or rear axle.
Wheels & Brakes:
Tyres have 5–6 mm tread but are older. Original wheels are in good condition with surface rust. Brakes function well.
Service History
The previous owner acquired the car in 1988 and has maintained it since, mostly by himself or through contacts. There is documentation covering several decades, although the service book is not filled in according to factory specifications. Inspection-exempt due to age.
Summary
A 1967 Mercedes-Benz 230 Safari/Universal in usable condition – one of six remaining in Sweden and one of only two with a manual transmission. This estate is a rare relic from a time when Philipsons took matters into their own hands to create a unique vehicle tailored for the Swedish market.
A car with soul, history, and character – and a unique opportunity for a collector or enthusiast to acquire an example that is virtually impossible to find again.
