Basic information and history
The 1968 Mercedes-Benz 200D Safari is a model that has enchanted collectors and enthusiasts alike for decades, not least because of its rarity and uniqueness. The Safari variant, produced through a special order program by Swedish importer Philipsons , is distinguished by its practicality and at the same time discreet elegance. The 1968 model was among the last in the line of these exclusive wagons, and here we offer a piece of Swedish automotive history.
This car was sold new in Sweden and is one of the very last Safari models produced. Over the past decades it has had five owners, several of whom were dedicated Mercedes collectors. Since 2017, the current owner has realized a lifelong dream of owning a Safari, after seeing a similar car in a parking lot in Uppsala back in 1984.
The car has been featured in the magazine Klassiker (issue 8/2016) and still attracts great interest today. An extra detail worth mentioning is the split rear seat, something that was groundbreaking for the time – long before, for example, the Volvo 245.
Equipment and options
- Towbar (factory-fitted and only equipment other than standard)
- Period caravan mirrors (not mounted) are included
No other modifications have been made from the original design.
Condition
Body & Paint: A previous owner renovated the car just over 10 years ago. At that time, the car was repainted in the original color DB158 Weissgrau and had sheet metal damage repaired, including on the floor and tailgate. The paint is in working condition today, but without a show finish. There are a few pin-sized surface rust spots and small scratches in the windows, but no stone chips or paint blisters. The body is in good condition throughout, with the chrome details in good condition, but with some age-related traces of oxide on some moldings. All headlight lenses are intact.
Interior: The dashboard, controls and door sides are in very good condition. The rubber mats show dry cracks. The MB-Tex (vinyl) seats are intact but painted; the sides of the driver's seat have visible wear where the paint has come off and the red bottom is visible. The steering wheel, controls and buttons are original and work flawlessly, and the headliner is without tears but with some minor discoloration.
Tires & rims: Michelin XZX 185/15 tires are the correct size and have sufficient tread depth, but show dry cracks. The rims are original and in good working condition.
Mechanics & function: The engine starts after manual glow and offers a classic diesel rumble. The engine and gearbox work excellently, with a distinct clutch and no noise. The brake system has recently been overhauled - new calipers at the front and new wheel cylinders at the rear; the brakes apply smoothly and safely. New exhaust system 2018.
Service history
The last service was carried out in 2017 , when the car's oil and filter were changed (only driven about 1000 km since then). The brakes have recently been renovated and checked. The car was last MOT-inspected on 2017-07-10 with a passing result and is therefore exempt from further inspection for vehicles of this age.
Summary
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a 1968 Mercedes-Benz 200D Safari – a Swedish car icon in classic design, with proven provenance from initiated Mercedes collectors. The car combines usability, collector's value and an almost mythical status on the Swedish car scene. With improvements carried out to the body and brakes, as well as recent service, the car is ready for the next passionate owner to take over. For those looking for the ultimate project or a car with soul, character and history, this is an offer that rarely comes around. Hello, I'm writing from Germany and using Google Translate. Are there any pictures of the underbody? In the pictures, it looks like the jack mounts are missing. Is that true? Thanks
Hello, thanks for your message! There are no other pictures from the underbody and the jack mounts are missing. Best regards
Thanks for the answer. Sorry to ask, but are the floor panels still in their original structure or have they been repaired with smooth sheet metal?Best regards
Hello again. Sorry for delayed answer but I needed to check the car before I could answer you. The left front mat was attached to the floor and there was a risk of damaging it so I did not do that. The right front floor has a structure that seems to be original and the left and right back floors does not have that structure, they are more smooth. Best regards
