Packard Caribbean 5.8 V8 Ultramatic 1955

Basic Information and History

An exclusive and rare American classic – this is one of only 500 Packard Caribbeans produced in 1955, and one of very few in all-black finish. The car was imported from the USA as a restoration project and arrived in Sweden in 2003, where Sven Sandgren, the current owner's father, began an extensive total restoration – from scrap condition to show quality.

With the help of contacts in the USA, original parts were sourced from junkyards across the country. These were shipped to Sweden and used to restore the car to its original specification. The project included a complete engine rebuild down to the smallest detail, newly manufactured original-style interior, and a new convertible top made in Mexico.

After 5–6 years of work, the car was ready for its maiden voyage in 2009 and was subsequently shown at several car events. It has won multiple awards, including the People’s Choice at Power Meet Västerås.

After the owner’s sudden passing in 2010, the car was stored for 10 years, only taken out for short drives around the block. In total, the car has been driven approximately 5,500 km since the restoration. In 2020, it underwent a service and passed inspection.

Condition

Body & Paint

The body is largely in show condition. All chrome was redone in 2008 and remains in excellent condition, though some rust has appeared on the rear bumper and there is a small scratch on the front bumper. The paint, redone in 2008, is of very high quality, with the exception of two small bubbles on the left rear fender.

Interior

In absolute top condition – newly made interior according to original specifications, virtually like new. No damage or wear on seats, door panels, trim, or dashboard. Steering wheel, controls, and knobs are in perfect condition. New convertible headliner, without damage.

Function & Electronics

All mechanical components in the drivetrain and brake system are functioning properly. However, a few minor issues remain, including:

  1. Gauges need to be connected
  2. Electric motor for driver’s window is loose
  3. Power seat needs attention
  4. Radio is non-functional
  5. Wipers work intermittently
  6. Right door handle needs adjustment from the inside
  7. Trunk mat is missing

Engine & Drivetrain

The engine has been fully rebuilt, down to the last detail, and runs flawlessly. The automatic transmission functions as it should – though the gear selector indicator needs cosmetic adjustment.

Tires & Wheels

The whitewall tires are in good condition with plenty of tread. Wheels are free of damage.

Glass & Chrome

All glass is in good condition. All chrome parts and emblems have been rechromed.

Service History

Last serviced in 2020 in conjunction with a starter motor rebuild. At the same time, an oil change and general inspection of the car's systems were carried out. The car passed inspection on 2020-10-05 without any remarks.

No service book is available, which is common for vehicles of this age.

Summary

This is a unique opportunity to acquire a rare and historic American classic in condition that will impress at both car shows and among collectors. This 1955 Packard Caribbean is not only one of the most desirable Packard models ever – with its black paint, rebuilt engine, and show-quality finish, it is a true showstopper.

Fully restored from scrap to show condition. It has been driven approximately 5,500 km since the restoration and has won several awards, including the People’s Choice at Power Meet Västerås. The car has been featured in both local press and automotive magazines.

It needs some minor electrical attention, but at its core, this is a fantastic vehicle with soul and character – perfect for the collector or enthusiast looking for something truly out of the ordinary.

Very beautiful car. Do you have any videos of the car running?

  • Packard55SellerMay 30, 2025 11:40

Hello. Unfortunately, we don't have any videos of the car. We haven't thought about that. The car is a bit far away from us, otherwise we could have filmed a bit. It runs very well in idle, but is a bit sluggish when you drive it. The car hasn't been driven in a while and maybe the carburetors need more exercise.

According to the Packard Club in Sweden, this car is one of 4 restored in the world. I don't know if it's true, but only a few factory-painted black ones were made in 1955.

Thank you, there is an original black one down here in New Zealand. Are there any issues with the torsion level suspension? I noticed the rear was up in one of the pictures

Hi. We are not very familiar with this car, as it was only Linda's (My wife) father who renovated and drove it. Is there anything we can check for you, because I don't know what it does?

  • Packard34May 31, 2025 04:18

That’s okay. I am sorry for your loss. I think the torsion suspension looks okay. I sold a 55 Caribbean 7 years ago for equivalent of 240,000 sek and I have missed it ever since. I noticed the tow ball, what was towed behind the car?

Hi. My father-in-law loved old odd vehicles and bought a lot of different cars and old caravans that he would renovate. He had a dream of renovating an old caravan to pull behind. He put on a hook for that but is not yet used.
