Basic information and history

The 1953 Land Rover Series I represents the early era of British four-wheel drive engineering with its aluminium body on frame, leaf suspension and simple, service-friendly technology. These early Land Rovers are often appreciated for their simple but robust engineering and enormously good accessibility for the skilled driver. The model comes with a 2.0-litre petrol engine, four-speed manual gearbox and selectable four-wheel drive with high and low range. The combination of low weight and robust construction made the model popular in agriculture, emergency services and early expeditions around the world.

The body has a documented paint history: originally in the color Deep Bronze Green , then repainted in fire department red, and finally restored to the original color by a previous owner.

This Swedish-sold vehicle has an interesting history of use connected to the fire department, which explains the periodic equipment and certain adaptations. A special spare wheel holder was manufactured for the bonnet during the fire department period. This was later modified so that the spare wheel and holder can be dismantled to enable driving with the windscreen folded over the bonnet. The seller also states that the original drawbar has been modified with a welded towbar and then hot-dip galvanised. The fuel tank has been replaced with a stainless steel one, but the original tank is included with the car for those who want to restore it. The rims have been repainted and shod with period-accurate off-road tyres. In connection with this, the brakes were also refurbished.

The information above is provided by the seller.

Equipment and options

  • Overdrive
  • Front release hub

  • Engageable four-wheel drive with high and low gear

Modifications and improvements: Spare wheel holder on the bonnet adapted for fire brigade use, later modified for easy removal and folding windscreen. The drawbar has been fitted with a welded towbar and then galvanized. The paint has been restored to Deep Bronze Green after a period in fire brigade red. According to reports, there are also mechanical improvements such as new valves and valve seats in the engine and refurbished brakes before the standstill. The tank has been replaced with stainless steel.

Condition

Body and exterior: Repainted back to original color Deep Bronze Green . The seller describes the paint as worn with general wear and tear. The side windows are worn. The chrome, moldings, headlight lenses and emblems are stated to be in good condition. Spare tire holder on the hood is present and can be removed as above.

Interior: Original interior with age-related wear according to the seller. Seats with discoloration and cracks. Steering wheel has cracks. No headliner as the vehicle has a canopy.

Tires and rims: Tires in new condition according to the seller.

Mechanics and function: The engine has had new valves and valve seats. The gearbox and driveline are reported to be in good condition. The brake system, including slave cylinders, has been overhauled prior to the shutdown. The fuel pump rotates but does not transport gasoline, which means that the engine will not start and the vehicle cannot be driven in its current condition.

Service history

The last documented service was carried out five years ago, when the car was put away. The seller states that the brakes were overhauled before being put away and that the valves and valve seats in the engine were replaced. There are some service records, history or receipts that prove the work and maintenance, but full documentation is not specified.
