Background and History

A clear candidate for the offroad motorcycle Hall-of-Fame. The real Ur-GS!

Considered by many to be the first true Adventure motorcycle, this bike has an almost mythical character. It showed the world that you could win the Paris Dakar with Hubert Auriol in the saddle one day and then go on a trip around the world the next, all on the same bike.

“G/S” stands for “Gelände/Straße”, which in German means “Off-road/On-road,” a reference to the dual nature of this motorcycle.

This example was sold in Sweden and was put into use on May 19, 1981. The entire motorcycle has since undergone an extensive renovation and is in incredibly fine condition.

The engine is, in true BMW fashion, a 2-cylinder air-cooled boxer that is both reliable and powerful.
Shaft-drive means you don't have to change chains and the high ground clearance and TKC80 tires make it just as suitable over logs and rocks as along a curvy country road.

Summary

Iconic may be a worn-out expression, but this is truly one of the world's most influential and awe-inspiring bikes. For many, it is nothing more than iconic! This is also why they are so sought after by collectors around the world.

You can ride them hard and long, they have a great heritage and represent the beginning of what is today the biggest genre in the motorcycle world.

Finding such a fine example with a well-documented history and impeccable condition is rare. There aren't many Swedish-sold R80 G/S left. This is one of them and we think it's fantastic.
