Basic information and history

Domestically sold BMW 323i from 1979 with approx. 160850km on the odometer. Mileage can be guaranteed by the owner. The car was owned by BMW Förenade Bil Import between 79-81. In 1981, according to the traffic register, the car passed into private ownership until 1999 when it was sold to owner number three. He owned the car until 2021 when the current owner took over the car to fix it up. Total production of the flagship in the E21 model series amounts to approximately 137,107 units, and only 9,140 units of these had an automatic transmission as an option. This makes the car unusual, especially since it is also sold in Sweden.

Equipped with a 2.3-liter straight six of approx. 140hp connected to a 3-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive.

Condition

Under the current owner's supervision, the car has been repainted in the original color in 2023. The body is free of rust, dents, worse scratches and door knocks. Before painting, all moldings were removed and the bodywork was sanded down. When grinding down, there was no rust on the bodywork. The glass panes have normal wear and tear from the past years. Chrome, moldings and lamp glass in normal condition considering age, and gives a good impression. The rims are in good condition with tires that were fitted in 2022. The tires have rolled just under 500km since fitting.

The interior is in good condition considering its age. Instrument panel is free of typical dry cracks that occur over time. Clothing is described as being free of damage. Door panels and steps in good condition. Steering wheel, buttons and controls as well. The inner ceiling is in good condition but hangs slightly above the doors. All functions in the passenger compartment work as they should.

Engine has been gone through and received a major service including oil change, filter, spark plug, timing belt, tension rollers, water pump and thermostat. The Bosch K-Jetronic injection has also been refurbished. The driveline is described as being in very good condition with no noise or complaints. All brake calipers have been refurbished, new discs and pads and brake pipes have been installed. Mechanically, everything works as intended.

Service history

The vehicle has undergone a total overhaul by an independent BMW specialist workshop in Stockholm. What was done then was: New radiator, new brakes, refurbished yokes, new discs, brake pipes, refurbished K-Jetronic, new timing belt, tension roller, water pump, thermostat, filter, oils, spark plugs, new tires, fuel pump, and more. Service book is not available, however all inspection reports from 1981 onwards are available which verify the mileage. All receipts from the major service are available. The car will be inspected before sale. Last inspection was 1999-12-23 at 153,753km.

Summary

BMW's most lavish of the E21 models. Melodious straight six and rear-wheel drive together with a light rear carriage offer exciting driving, especially if motoring magazines from the 80s are to be believed. The E21 did very well in racing in the 70s and 80s and this example reeks of racing pedigree!
